A blood meal is necessary to progress to each successive stage of the life cycle. If a tick feeds on a small mammal (white-footed mouse) infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacteria, it may reinfect its next carrier such as a deer, dog, or human, and transmit Lyme disease.
